B i o g r a p h y
Born in Montreal, Mélanie Léonard is the Music Director of Symphony New Brunswick and Assistant Professor of Instrumental Conducting at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, where she also leads the McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble. She previously served as Resident and Associate Conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and as Music Director of the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra.
As a guest conductor, she has collaborated with major institutions including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, the Orchestre Métropolitain, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de São Paulo in Brazil.
She is active in studio recording, conducting soundtracks for Moment Factory’s Aura at Montreal’s Notre‑Dame Basilica, Paradise City in South Korea, and Cirque du Soleil’s Land of Fantasy in Hangzhou, China.
Dedicated to contemporary music, she founded three organizations: Prima Ensemble, the Wild West New Music Ensemble, and the Calgary New Music Festival.
During the 2025–2026 season, she returned to the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and conducted the premiere of Songs of the Drowning by Iranian‑C
anadian composer Roozbeh Tabandeh with Ensemble Paramirabo and Chants Libres. She will also make her debuts at Festival Classica and the Festival d’Opéra de Québec, conducting Laurence Jobidon’s chamber opera L’hiver attend beaucoup de moi.
Ms. Léonard was the first woman to complete a doctorate in orchestral conducting at the Université de Montréal. In 2012, she received the Canada Council for the Arts’ Jean‑Marie Beaudet Award for Orchestral Conducting.

Née à Montréal, Mélanie Léonard est Directrice musicale de Symphonie Nouveau‑Brunswick et Professeure adjointe de direction d’orchestre à l’École de musique Schulich de l’Université McGill, où elle dirige également l’Ensemble de musique contemporaine de McGill. Elle a auparavant été cheffe en résidence puis cheffe associée du Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, ainsi que Directrice musicale du Sudbury Symphony Orchestra.
Invitée à diriger plusieurs grands orchestres, elle a collaboré avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, le Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, l’Orchestre Métropolitain, l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts, ainsi que l’Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de São Paulo au Brésil.
Très active dans le domaine des enregistrements, elle a dirigé les trames sonores d’Aura à la Basilique Notre‑Dame de Montréal, de Paradise City en Corée du Sud, ainsi que de Land of Fantasy, un spectacle du Cirque du Soleil présenté à Hangzhou, en Chine.
Engagée dans la création contemporaine, elle a fondé trois organismes dédiés à la musique nouvelle : l’Ensemble Prima, le Wild West New Music Ensemble et le Calgary New Music Festival.
